CCTV images of football fans have been released by police investigating trouble at last month’s Wear-Tyne derby.

Officers believe the eight men pictured may be able to help them with their inquiries into derby day disorder at the Stadium of Light on January 16.

A total of 37 people were arrested on the day inside and outside the Black Cats ground for a range of offences, including drunk and disorderly and going onto the playing area.

A dedicated police team was launched after the game, which ended with Sunderland scoring an equaliser in the dying minutes, to carry out a post-match inquiry into the disorder.

They have trawled through thousands of photographs and hours of CCTV and video footage on the day to help them with their investigation.

Now, police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the men.

Chief Superintendent Rachel Kearton, of Sunderland Area Command, said: “Fans who get involved in disorder before, during or after games spoil it for the real supporters and we won’t tolerate this sort of behaviour.

“We will act on any information received from the public and ensure that those involved in disorder are identified, put through the courts and receive appropriate penalties and Banning Orders.

“I’d appeal to the genuine fans to work with us to help weed out these people and ensure that football matches are safe and enjoyable events.

“I’d ask anyone who has any information about the men in these photographs to contact us as soon as possible.”

A teenager is also alleged to have shoved Newcastle United goalkeeper Steve Harper during the game. He later publicly apologised for his actions.
