After a weekend on the piss with work in Paris, I spent 4 hours being violently sick around the gardens on our way home. It didn't go down well with the tourists. I must have spoilt at least 1000 romantic holidays

Tidied. Damn, I can't switch off, even in the summer holidays...

Anyway, depends what you're after. The Louvre will take ages but has some big impressive stuff; if you want more modern things (ie 19th century onwards - impressionist classics etc), go to the Musée d'Orsay. If you want more art, the Musée Picasso is great.

Random thoughts...various strolls along the river are worth it. The Ile de la cité and Ile St Louis. The Latin Quarter is nice, but then so is Montmartre to the north; both will be heaving, but are probably essential. Jardin du Luxembourg is a lovely park for sitting by the pond on a sunny day.

Take the metro line 6 from the Arc de Triomphe (Charles-de-Gaulle/Etoile) - it goes southwards, crosses the river on a bridge and gives a lovely view of the Eiffel Tower. Get off at Denfert-Rochereau where you can visit the Catacombs and see one hell of a lot of skulls...

If you're homesick, Le Frog et Rosbif is an English pub on Rue St Denis selling home-brewed beer. And it's right next door to all the sex shops...
