Default King Charlie and Johnny Crossan...

....posing for pictures with their caps.

Random I know but glad to see both in good health! They posed for photos for us as they feature in the next issue of the magazine as guest editors.

    Memories of the two?

If the Club has anything about it at all then they must have the King at the match on Sunday. Pitch before kickoff, the place would start rocking. His comments earlier in the week show where he heart is.

Strange that my memory of charlie was seeing him getting knocked out in the roker end by a shot from geoff hurst.Late sixties and the footballs were much heavier than now and hurst blasted the ball into charlies head from point blank range.
I was only a lad and I thought he might be dead as he just lay flat out on the pitch, the trainer came on and woke him up with smelling salts / the sponge .
Charlie just got up ,shook his head and ran up the pitch to take his position.
If it had been nowadays the player would have gone off on a stretcher and been subed.

You want to read his tale about the 6th round F A cup match at old trafford

when we were winning 3-1 with about 10 minutes to go, conversation went something

like this : we were winning 3-1 with 8 minutes to go, he (denis law) blasted a shot

straight at jimmys (montgomery) face, he went down, he was out for the count,

the ref came across and said, "are you okay jimmy ? can you get up ? no,

charlie's standing on my arm !!!!!" l could have killed him charlie said, if only

he had of stopped down for a couple of more minutes we would have won that,

and anyone that was there that day would have to agree, we did murder them

only for Law to swoop late on when jimmy didnt know where he was.

My first away game...at Old Trafford in that sixth round..was only a seven year old kid but it still ranks in my heart as the best performance at a big game by a Sunderland player...Johnny Crossan tormented them and scored two.

Should never have drawn that game..nor the replay..the famous doors broke tie with maybe as many as 70,000 inside. Scary night, sandwiched between my dad and uncle for safety in the Clock Stand which was all-standing in those days..but what a memory those two games will always be.

Of all the hundreds of players since no one will ever come close to Johnny Crossan...sure some of the older posters on here will remember his last minute goal which sealed promotion in '64.
