Default Is it wrong to begrudge Footballers the money they earn?

Historically, academic achievement has always been rewarded. Now, sports stars are dwarfing the salaries that those academics i.e. poiticians, scientists, mathematicians etc could earn in a lifetime! Successfull artist also ridicule what those guys earn as do actors.

My point is, if you are a sportsman on £20k+ a week, wouldn't that do strange things to your head like it has to so many of my favourite artists? and, should uneducated men like Footballers really be in receipt of such vast sums of money?

I don't think they should personally even though 'they deserve it'

    It's an odd contradiction.

How many academics have earned multimillion pounds salaries per year ever? Footballers (and other sportsmen) are now on a par with top Hollywood actors and the big few rock stars (tax avoiders like The Rolling Stones and U2). Entertainment is always valued above intelligence at every level, unfortunately.

Yes, some say football is a matter of life or death.

But some players get paid more a week than our PM, who often sends people to their death on a weekly basis.

Stress levels are completely different, just ask Tevez.

Nothing wrong with footballers earning £100k per week. Its just a shame so many real fans are being priced out of attending games to cover it though.

There's not 1 player in the premier that I would pay to go and see. Yet there are so-called superstars earning vast amounts of money. I cant really work it out.................

That´s not really true..at the ancient Olympic games in Greece the winner of the prestige competitions like Pancration earned enough to retire for life, while learned philosophers often had to live on their rich friends..if they had any.

    Nothing changes, ever..

Nope. They put bums on seats and people are willing to pay large sums of money to see them perform, either in the flesh or via a subscription.

They bring the money into the clubs and take quite a bit out of it too. I can think of dozens of professions who do a much more 'worthwhile' job but that's the way of the world.

90% don't do enough imo and i'm replying to your comment as it's worth the time. Would you justify anything if it's 'a means to an end'? your comments suggest to me you would.

And also, don't think for one moment they give a flying fuck about you, or your interestes in your beloved team.

    don't defend them

I don't think academic achievement has ever been particularly well rewarded financially.

I used to defend footballers on the grounds that at least they have to go out and prove their abilities every week, unlike some pen pushers whom you never hear hide nor hair of until they get their multi million pound bonus. And that might be a failing company too.

Football is almost entirely a merit based system, and it doesn't matter much which school you went to or who your father was.

Pretty good take on the situation.
