Darren Bent is a great goal-scorer. Fantastic poacher. He is perfect for a mid-table to lower half of the table team that will have to battle for 3 or 4 half-chances a game, and need someone to hop around the box and score one or 2 of those chances...
If you desire to be more than that, and want to build a free and flowing football team, with a sustained attack against the opposition, he is not your man...His touch is suspect, his ability to interlink with his partners through clever passes or one-twos, is below par for that kind of game.
That area is where Welbeck excels. Danny has, what is considered the best first touch at United, he interlinks well, seeing 2 or 3 moves ahead (see Gyan goal against Chelsea and the pass to henderson), and has added strength and tenacity to his game....Granted, he has only done it for Sunderland for 2 or 3 games, but if you have watched him up the reserves and academy as I or other United fans have, you know what the boy has in his locker. Many United fans see Welbeck as having Thierry Henry potential. The question is whether he can translate what he has been doing up the levels with United to the Premier league. And after an initial struggle (he also struggled initiallly going from academy to reserve football), he is seemingly beginning to do it for you all against quality premier league teams (City, Spurs, Everton, Chelsea). At the age of 20, an age where few strikers make their mark.
And yes, as of today, he has not accomplished as much as Bent. But he has much more in his locker than Bent. And once he puts it all together consistently, he will be better than Bent...I don't think it's disrespectful to Bent to say this...
After you slag me off, watch these:
