Manager Steve Bruce says striker Fraizer Campbell isn't likely to play again this season.
Campbell, who has spent most of the season on the sidelines, twisted his knee in the run-up to the Manchester City game and has been receiving treatment since.
But he is unlikely to return this season, with Bruce admitting the news is a "devastating" blow.
"Fraizer is likely to have to go back and see the specialist who operated on him previously," the manager said.
"He'll open up the knee up and have a look to see how things are."
The former Manchester United frontman hasn't figured in a senior game since damaging his cruciate ligaments in late August.
He has played 40 career games for Sunderland since joining in summer 2009, scoring seven goals.

Bad news, we could do with another option up front.

I dread to think how good Campbell will be by the time he returns.

Hopefully this will give him plenty of time to recover through the summer.

Probably would've been pointless playing him in the last few games of the season anyway seeing as we have nothing to play for.

Not if the need to redo the knee again. He'll be out for 4-6 months at least.

True. I'm just hoping it isn't going to be that serious though.

Fingers crossed like, but if they have to open it up again to have a look then there must be something up.

Both Meyler and Campbell astounded me at how quick they were apparently "on course" to be back playing football. No suprise that after their particular injuries they have both had a problem after twisting their knee's.

That basically comes down to the knee not beng strong enough, which if the operation has been succesful only really comes from doing things too early. Yes you've got to push it to a certain extent to move on and after a similar operation I have had little niggles too, which is normal - but how often do you hear of this at other clubs?

Fair enough if one does it, but two? After all the stuff about Bruce, Friar and injuries?
