Default Driving advice - approaching slip roads on motorways

I'd like some advice re: when cars are on the acceleration lane (slip road) approaching a road with 2+ carriageways.

I always thought that when you're on the slip road approaching the carriageway that you alter your speed so that you can safely move onto the motorway/dual carriageway.

Today I was on the 1st lane of the M1 and nearly got hit by a car entering the motorway. I couldn't stop or move into lane 2 as I'd have hit someone else.

Should the driver approaching the motorway have altered their speed so that they moved onto the motorway when it was safe?

Because it seems like a lot of drivers just carry on at the same speed and hope to find a gap.

OK thanks. It seems I was justified in mouthing obscenities and waving my arms around (whilst keeping control of my vehicle).

Interesting, when I was on the speed awareness course the only thing that stuck in my mind afterwards, was if you are entering a motorway/dual carriage and you cannot get out, you have to stop, or at least slow down until you can get out.

It seems that people want to be on the motorway at any cost these days...

    That's what I thought.

I'm not a very good or confident driver but it seems that motorway driving is a free for all at the moment.

I drive between J25 and 26 of the M1 quite regularly and there are 4 lanes now but most drivers just cruise at a steady speed in lanes 2 and 3.

If you slowed down a bit and left a bit of room for others, you'd find the number of morons goes down

    Driving on the motorway
    259
Joining the motorway. When you join the motorway you will normally approach it from a road on the left (a slip road) or from an adjoining motorway. You should

give priority to traffic already on the motorway
check the traffic on the motorway and match your speed to fit safely into the traffic flow in the left-hand lane
not cross solid white lines that separate lanes or use the hard shoulder
stay on the slip road if it continues as an extra lane on the motorway
remain in the left-hand lane long enough to adjust to the speed of traffic before considering overtaking

You just met one of the many unthinking morons of our roads. They are a large family unfortunately.

OK thanks for the replies. I also checked the Highway Code and it seems that I may need to speed up a bit on the motorway as I usually stick to 56mph to conserve fuel.
