    Default AWD vehicle question

My car is making a whining noise when I turn corners.

I first thought it was wind up so I jacked the back end up and nothing happened. I then dropped the diff oil to see if that was it (or to see if metal fell out aswell) all seemed good. Now my abs light is coming on with a warning sign saying my diff lock is off. I looked at taking the prop off but it's a sealed unit with the diff box, same goes for the half shafts.

What else can I do. It doesn't effect the vehicle from what I can tell but that noise is horrible (and obviously could be causing problems)
It feels like the rear wheels are struggling to push the car when the frontwheels are turned.

    Can anyone help please?

If your diff is whining it suggests the bearings have gone. This won't always show in the oil tho.

Is that a hard job to fix? I know a bit about spannering but don't want to wreck it.

Or should I just accept defeat and let the garage fix it

Unless you know about setting up the preload on the diff pinion with a vernier and micrometer etc... I'd leave well alone and let a garage do it personally.

For a whining diff you'd usually change the diff and pinion bearings together as well as the pinion oil seal.

Not a difficult job per se but not something I'd tackle as a DIY'er

    Is it an expensive job?

It wasn't cheap when I worked at Jeep but they were a dealership and notoriously expensive anyway.
I think it's the time it takes more than anything.

    You got rid of it?
I'm on my fourth. Can't see myself driving anything else. If I came up on the lotto I would still have a Wrangler, just pimp it out with spinning rims!

And OP when did 'Four Wheel Drive' become 'All Wheel Drive' like somehow it's more? Do they still call hatchbacks 'Five Doors' like you can get in and out through the boot?

I think Subaru call their 4 wheel drive system all wheel drive.
