If you watch most other professional sports there seems to be much less controversial refereeing decisions, some of the reasons for this IMO are they apply the rules consistently and do not favour bigger clubs, they also use video technology to assist the officials, like it or not, technology is the way forward, sadly the dinosaurs who run the game seem to think more incompetent officials is the answer

Too many current players (especially amongst the proverbial and feted big 4) successfully referee games already.

You don't have to be an ex pro to know that what happened yesterday was stupid.
It doesn't help when the ref has been shown to be prone to high profile mistakes in the past, and fast-tracked to the Premier League anyway.
