    Default Charlie Austin

    Worth a punt?

Ok he may be a League 1 striker but 20 league goals in a team that didn't even get automatic promotion is very good going.

Only 20 years old and seems to have that added desire Phillips had that helps when you have come from no where - Perhaps he wont get complacent and think he has made it like so many always proffessional footballers who have never known any different.

Anyway for 1.5 - 2 million ish I think considering Beckford at the same level is maybe off to Everton, and at his age, I think Austin is worth a shot.

He is 4 years younger even then Phillips was when he really first emerged and looks a natural finisher, with the right coaching and development I think he could go on to be a very good player

No, we have youngsters like Campbell, Waghorn and Noble, they should be given a chance up front before someone like Austin.

I know what you mean, you dont want to stop anyone's development - I just have a sneaky feeling about Austin that he will go on to be a very good player - Or at least get himself a cracking goal scoring record at any level he plays at.

Sometimes you can tell for me by the sort of goals people score. The amount of times Earnshaw or someone puts the ball in through a flukey scuff or you think Christ, what was the keeper doing there or similar. He was a good poacher but could never do it at a higher level. Unlike your Earnshaws etc...

Whenever I have seen Austin he looks different (Predominantly on the football league show ) the goals he gets are the sort that suggest he could make it at a top level. He always strikes it cleanly, seen loads go in off or near to the post, being basically unstoppable whoever he has to beat. which to me suggests provided he could find space he could be a great finisher at the highest level.

You could be talking about Simon Cox at Swindon last season, he stepped up to play for WBA in the Championship and didn't quite impress as much.

Plus if we were going to sign a young striker I think it would have to be someone with a bit of height, as that's something we don't have a lot of in the youth and reserves, Tounkara apart. Probably why we are interested in Wickham.

Overall I would say Austin is not different enough from Waghorn, Noble and Campbell and wouldn't warrant getting a place ahead of them.

As Swindon's last home game of the season there were a number of scouts having a look at the lad. At least one was from the upper reaches of the Premiership.

Worth a punt from someone. Don't think it will be us though.

    He's very much like Bent.

He's a great goalscorer but contributes little else, but he definitely knows where the back of the net is.

I think you'd be better off looking elsewhere
