    Default Running or walking?

Hi lads, just after a bit of advice on what exercise is best for losing weight when combined with a low carb diet.

I've turned into a right fat bastard since i left my job a year and a half ago.Last year i lost almost 3 stone in 3 months with a low carb diet without exercising. To be honest i usually lose weight quite quickly anyway by cutting out the rubbish -loads of bread and crisps etc.

Would walking for a couple of miles on a morning really make that much difference to weight loss or would the benefit be minimal? I intend to either walk or run on a morning to get myself a bit healthier but i'm not sure which is better for weight loss.

Cheers in advance for any advice.

Running is going to burn more calories in a shorter space of time amongst other benefits, so I'd run a few times a week and walk a few times a week, as running is also quite stressful on the joints.

Also, if it suits you then fine, but with carbs I'd actually start relatively high, most people think they're necessary to lose fat but they aren't. A bodybuilder I follow on youtube is 140lb and cutting for a contest that's only a few weeks away on 300g carbs.

The only thing I'd avoid if you're low carb is sprints or intervals..

Walking is probably better for fat bastards, it won't knacker your knees/ankles/the pavement. By all means try running though because it'll give us something to laugh at.

On a more serious note, the benefit of walking a few miles would only be minimal you thought it would allow you to eat an extra pie that day. Diet is still the most important thing to lose weight with.

    Cheers for the replies lads.

I have no problem looking like an idiot running if it's more beneficial

I have just had so much conflicting advice about the benefits of running and walking.Would it be true to say then that walking over a longer distance would be more benefical than running over a shorter distance?

    @Titus.

Thanks! Running and walking on alternate days is something i hadn't considered for some reason.

It's all a bit of trial and error but I certainly wouldn't start with too low carbs.

Get your diet sorted and start with walking maybe build up to jogging. Or join a gym and get some weights done and some lower impact cardio if your joints are a problem.

Aye,jogging killed my shins and knees last week.It was probably a mix of never having done it for a long time and those skateboarding trainers i was running in

I know i can lose the weight with the diet as i've done it before but this time i'd like to get a bit fitter too.

    Thanks for the reply mate.

If your going walking try to get some hills or slopes in, the difference in energy used between walking uphill and on the flat is massive

Well i was out this morning and it was an uphill struggle even on the flats

I think i may have found a solution though. For some reason i forgot all about Pontefract racecourse.I'm going to try and jog round that course tomorrow.I'll see how i hiold up on the grass.

If i can push through the first week i reckon i'll be okay.

Remember that there are different types of running. Sounds silly doesn't it. Well, sprinting is different to endurance running is it not. If your goal is to lose weight I'd recommend that you trying sprinting. Ups the metabolic rate and burns fat first, as opposed to endurance running (anything over 400m) which will burn muscle first.

    This is an important point.

Is this actually true? Just had a flick through a biochemistry text book which seems to contradict that.
