    Default Planning permission question

Does anyone know if you need planning permission to turn a garage into a bedroom or flat?

The garage is attached to a house.

Check with your local authoity to be on safe side. I think you would only need planning permission if you were going to extend the garage (bedroom/flat) at the same time.

It was change of use and conformation with building regs etc you could get away with. I did it once with a previous house but went through planning anyway because i was actually increasing the floor area of the living space, unless you are converting it as a bathroom or kitchen which are transient rooms or something like that then it may be best to.

edit - If you are turning it into a flat then i'm certain you will need planning mate. Ask your local authority.

Yep, you deffo must inform them of the change of use of the space and sign up for building regs.

It will need properly insulating, which will not have been done as a garage. A bigger job than you think

At a previous property I was going to turn a garage and outbuilding into my offices, was going to be about £15k. Moved instead though

Needed planning for that with it being outbuildings like

It's actually next doors, who we are having problems with. Another neighbour said that they were asked if converting the garage to a sound proofed room would cause them a problem, we were not asked even though we are joined to them

Anyway, they are starting this morning so have not got planning permission, and I would love to fuck up their plans.

I'm sure they need permission for change of use.

Generally I've always found that planning departments will say yes you will, if you're losing a car parking space and adding additional habitable accommodation to the dwelling this may increase the car parking requirements in the local area which may not be available.

Planning portal says no you don't but it's always best to get a confirmation letter from the council.

    About Planning Portal adverts
Sometimes permitted development rights have been removed from some properties with regard to garage conversions and therefore you should contact your local planning authority before proceeding, particularly if you live on a new housing development or in a conservation area.

Where work is proposed to a listed building, listed building consent may be required.
