Default New Signings - Quantity vs Quality?

Soz to piss all ower some people's strawberries, but am I the only one still underwhelmed by our transfer activity so far?

Great to see the squad being strengthened, and some signings that show potential (Dong, Whickham) and experience (O'Shea).

But we still haven't some close to replacing BŁnt or found a proven midfield playmaker.

There's time yet, of course, and I might find that the midfielders are better than I think they are or that the strikers adapt to the PL quickly. But I'm still waiting the marquee signing that will be a cert for the first XI and add something special.

I'm a tad concerned that the left side problem still hasn't been addressed and while we've brought in a number of midfielders they're all much of a muchness. We needed a creative player and a combative player in the centre of the park and yet we've brought in someone who does exactly the same job as Colback and a distance shooter.

I'm very happy with Bruce's dealings on the defensive side (as long as Bardsley isn't in his plans for left back) and I'm confident that he'll bring in one more striker, probably Welbeck on loan.

This season is really all about quantity while adding one or two players of quality just because of how short we've been left with all the loanees leaving and the selling of players like Bent, Henderson, Riveros, Zenden etc..

If we had paid the going rate for Westwood, Vaughan and Larsson we would have forked out an extra Ł15m.

How anyone can be underwhelmed by the summers transfer dealings is mind boggling..

We probably have forked it out. Its just that the cash will have gone to the player rather than another club. No such thing as a free transfer.

I agree with you. I'm relatively pleased with our signings but we still need two or three real class players if our ambitions are to be realised and we are to begin competing with the likes of Villa and Everton.

The players who we've brought in are not a great deal better than the ones we let go:

Bent, Henderson, Welbeck, Zenden, Onouha, Mensah, Muntari.

Had we signed Onuoha, held onto Bent and then signed a left winger I think we'd be in one hell of a position to really make a go of it. As it stands, I still think we need a top striker, a left winger and a full-back.

I'm not convinced by Sessegnon, I hope I'm wrong but he only did a bit in the last three games. Looked no more than ok against a poor Wigan, better against Bolton (who had nowt to play for) and the same against a poor, dispirited West Ham. Looks too lightweight to me.

I doubt it......Larsson may have squeezed Ł30k/week out of us but the other two will be on Ł20k or less imo. Signing on fees are fairly standardised at a years salary paid over the life of the contract.
