They're compression tops. Improve blood circulation, reduce muscle vibration (less muscle fatigue) and depending on the type, they either keep you cool or keep you warm.

I don't wear them myself, I can't stand wearing more than one layer when I play sport, but I understand why some people might wear them. I prefer compression shorts to normal underwear.

    This.

It's more a way of enhancing performance legally than anything else.

The likes of Brian Clough and Don Revie I am sure are spinning in their grave at the namby-pamby attitude of players now.

You don't wear them because you don't bloody well need them!

Nor did the likes of Stanley Matthews as exemplified by the fact they would go to windy and freezing cold grounds in the middle of November with none of the shite on to help with blood circulation or reduce muscle vibration. If you wanted to improve blood circulation you ran bloody well harder! As for reducing muscle vibration, if you said to Cloughie "my muscles are vibrating boss!" he would probably have asked to you run bloody well much harder too!

They are pampered beyond belief and this pampering has given them ideas above their stattion about their place as a pro football player.

I'm not sure whether you're being serious or not, but the advances in professionalism, sports science and fitness have moved football on from those days.

And if you think if Revie was around and managing now, he wouldn't use this type of thing to his advantage, you are very mistaken - he squeezed every inch out of anything to give his Leeds team the upper hand.

Its all about science and psychology nowadays, anything for that little bit extra and a bit of an edge is good in my opinion.
