    Default 4-5-1

If we had some decent pace on the wings I reckon we could do very well playing 4-5-1 away from home next season.

A centre midfield of Catts, Cana & Riveros breaking up play, Catts & Riveros never stop running - And Bent up front on his own playing off the shoulder could be good spine.

If we had some real pace down the flanks then I'd fancy us to pick teams off with counter attacking football. However Henderson isnt the quickest and Malbranque as we all know is slow as fuck.

Be interesting to see how fast Muhammedi & Angerleri are - But if we had those 4 in the centre and someone like Geovanhi from Ivory Coast that we were linked with a few weeks ago then we would have some incredible pace to hit teams on the break.

Especially as Da Silva and Mensah (If he comes back) are probably two of the best ball playing centre backs we have had in ages, and I'd fancy them to take it off teams on the edge of the box and have the composure and ability to send people away.

no one plays 451, not succesfully anyway.

you are confusing it with 433.

would require 3 new signings for sunderland.

In my view they are part and parcel of the same formation.

4 5 1 is a defensive formation but is instantly turned into 4 3 3 in attack with two from the midfield five moving forward. If they are the two wingers then the two full backs can move up twenty or thirty metres and the formation is then 2 5 3 an even more attacking pattern.

Gordon - Angeleri, Westerman, Mensah, Taiwo/Figueroa - AlMuhammadi, Henderson, Cana/Riveros, Cattermole, N'Zogbia - Bent. I think this would work fine playing away from home.
