iplayer works fine on Ipad, but a laptop gets you more bang for your buck.

Go for a tablet of some type mate, you have a PC already for more PC related things, but a tablet is the way forward, instant boot, and much better for browsing internet etc.

Don't want to get involved in the Apple/Android argument but having used both the Xoom and the Ipad (and personally chosen the Xoom) I think both will offer the same facilities in terms of what is required for end use.

The Xoom is a more heavier and robust tablet than the IPad and subsequently I think it is more suited to the demands that enthusiastic youngsters will place on a tablet during use.

The new Transformer Prime was announced today with the Tegra3 chip in it. Supposed to be a huge jump forward in terms of power but also adds an extra (fifth) core for low power use. Means it's got cracking battery life for things like video viewing.

You can also get a dock for it which gives a proper keyboard, increases the battery life to 18 hours and allows it to be used almost like a laptop. Might give you the combination you're looking for. As Peachy says though I'd imagine it's going to come down to what they're happier using.

Laptops easily break, especially if it's a kid who it belongs too, tablets are fine but I don't care much for touchscreen.

I've bought both for the kids, the laptop is fecked and in a drawer the tablets I bought both of them last Christmas are still both fine.

Had I bought them a laptop each at least one would have come to some harm.

One of them cheap HP Touchpad tablets from a few weeks ago would have been ideal. Maybe someone on here who got one is bored with it by now, and will sell it on to you?

Failing that get a cheap Android tablet (several have been talked about on here) as it'll do the job fine and save you a fortune, especially if it ends up getting broken. An iPad would be utter overkill.
