My all time favourite World Cup by a mile. I really thought we'd go all the way, once we got past Camaroon. For once we had genuine class in the squad, as well as the usual grit and determination.

Was a great program that, ITV usually ruin everything they touch but that was well done.

The press treated Robson very shabbily in those days.

Makes you realise how crap this world cup has been. Download 'One Night in Turin' as well, better documentary to be honest, focuses on Englands campaign more, the press campaign against Robson and that fateful night in Turin. Still brings a tear to the eye!

Slightly different format back then, it was almost impossible to get eliminated in the first phase, 6 groups of 4, and the top 3 teams went though in 4 groups, Scotland still managed it though.

All played out by Pete Davis is a quality book about the England camp in that world cup.
    Well worth a look.

I think it's a piss poor indictment of English football that Italia 90 is looked on as a high water mark. We were really poor in the group stages, scraping through with a 1-0 win against Egypt and had a dream route into the semis but struggled to overcome the mighty Belgium and Cameroon. The Germany game was the first really good performance we put in!

I think people enthuse over it because they love all that "plucky English" horsecrap.

It's shocking the number of times we have gone out of major tournaments on penalties since 1990. I think the last time Germany lost on pens was the final of Euro 1976 - they decided it would never happen again and did something about it!
