the hapless Mr Graham Poll who ruined a great game by sending off three players, two from Sunderland, missing a clear pull in the box on Quinn by Jaap Stam when it was 0-0 and followed that up by missing an obvious hand-ball by Andy Cole in the run-up to the winner. Poll’s performance that night was the worst I have ever seen from a referee and I’ve seen a few bad ones over the years.

I agree with this 100%, how he missed the hand ball by Cole was just unbelievable, it is still in my mind to this day. Impossible for either him or one of his linesmen not to have seen it. Cole is about 17ft 13" and he has his arm reaching out in the air...and no one sees it except the entire attendance. Very odd.

Strangely, no one around me that night (other than me noticed). I immediately appealed having seen the blatant handball but assumed maybe I'd made a mistake only to get home and see the replay which showed it was as clear as day. IIRC Varga (of all people) had a late free kick which went just wide, we were unlucky that night and really fell away from there that season.

That handball was part of the reason I could never warm to Cole when he was here, plus the fact he was useless for us, was an ex Mag and a right dour sod to boot.
