I know that it can be a problem, but it also could be a lifesaver.
BBC Look N/W tonight featured a little boy who had his photo taken at Christmas, only one eye had the "Redeye" the other looked normal which it wasn't , it is a sign of Cancer of the eye.

To be honest this could cause chaos. The eye has to be pretty straight on to the flash to cause the red light to bounce back off the retina.

Cue thousands of panicking parents taking their little ones to casualty
