    Default Swirrel edge - Helvellyn

Second fatality in a few days

Never struck me as being particularly sharp or dangerous. Although I've never been up in conditions like these...

Clearly. I guess people are avoiding Striding Edge and using it

I shit myself when I went up it. Not as much as I shit myself up Tryfan. But then I shit myself going up the stairs as not a big fan of heights.

I must try Tryfan actually. The only mountain in Britain where scrambling is essential?

    Outside of the Cuillins perhaps

The first fatality was caused by the walker inadvertently walking onto the top of a snow cornice and falling through. The second?

Bad conditions to be walking in the hills at the moment. Avalanche prone.

There are 3 main sides to Tryfan. one is proper mountaineers stuff, which I didnt do, one is a nice walk by a stream and very pleasant (I came down that way) and one is the most terrifying scramble you can do where at points one slip is imminent death (I genuinely mean that). I went up that one. I had no idea before I did it what I was in for and would never ever do it again. And any daft twat who jumps adam and eve at the top needs to be sectioned under the mental health act.

    Many are, yes

But my memories of Swirrel Edge is walking down the hillside towards Red Tarn, don't remember any particularly exposed bits?

    Maybe at the very top?

I find Swirral a bit dodgier than Striding edge. The route isn't as clear in bad conditions. Nearly got lost on it in the fog a couple of years back.

Yeah, but from memory, even the tourist route needs a scramble?
