If I remember my GCSE physics correctly, the touching of the two different metals (tin and whatever's in the amalgam) and the reaction with the acid in your saliva creates a voltage. Try attaching two different metals to either side of an LED and sticking them in a lemon. SCIENCE IN ACTION!
