Default why is it called 'bbc newcastle'- it shouldn't be!

Yes I'm sad, but often wondered why our local bbc station is called BBC newcastle.

Surely the obvious choice would have been BBC North East or BBC Tyne and Wear. The former I would say seems it goes up to to the borders.

The other 'north east' stations are called Tees and Cumbria - regions that are more dominated by one town/city then ours is!

Same for BBCs Humberside, Merseyside and others.

I know there are some others named after just one city, but none so obviously not dominated by that one city as our region I would say.

I suggest a proper petition to have a name change.

Or is this whole thing seb?

    Me.

And it's not juts for footballing reasons. It merely serves to perputuate the regional and national feeling that newcastle is a bigger and better city than sunderland. Yes, in some ways it may be, but a public service paid for by everyone in the region should represent these equally. Even if the content does (arguable), the bloody name on the tin says it doesn't!

Telling away fans / visitors / tourists to listen to a bbc station all to do with another town if they want local news?! I wonder what impressions there going to have about which is the more vibrant place to visit and go spend their money / invest etc.
