I just don't see his motives as being anything other than financial, and I don't see any reason why they would be. He's not a Sunderland fan, he runs a fucking private equity fund. Realistically, he has no financial interest in making the club any better than a team that avoids relegation.
I just don't understand why any of this is a surprise, and I never, ever understood why people were so happy about him taking over. He's just another man with a big pile of money trying to make that pile of money even bigger. The top four isn't worth aiming for, and it's only being in the top four that makes significantly more money.
I'm not criticising him for his decisions anyway: I don't think anyone else would do any different. It's not Ellis Short's fault that the Premier League is so hideously uncompetitive.
