Default When did the Echo drop using 'Argos' and 'Vedra'?

The names may be mis-spelled but way back I'm sure the First Team reports were under the byline of 'Argos' and the Reserves reported by 'Vedra'.

    When did this practice cease?

What sort of catalogues do they sell? Love a bit of the Freemans' lingerie section.

The Vedra pen name disappeared in 1970 and the Argus name disappeared a few years later following the retirement of the last Argus, Bill Butterfield.

That long ago was it. More than half the SMB wont ever have heard of them.

DrumavilleDave has it just about right but Bill Buterfield, who was the last Argus, continued into the early 1980s. I know because I worked alongside him for another newspaper. Lovely but cantankerous old chap - and he loved the club. In the bar, his cry was always "A Bell's please!" Liked his Scotch. When he retired the Argus pen-name disappeared and the first by-lined reporter took over - Geoff Storey.
