Hotel in Barcelona

I'm going there with our lass (no pics) at the end of August, flights are booked but still need to sort a hotel - can anyone recommend somewhere central, not overpriced and clean.

Stayed there last year at the Princess Sofia Grand Hotel. Not cheap by any means but if you would like to rub shoulders with the footballers then look no further.

Pulitzer or 1898 on Las Ramblas for central. Personally I would use splendid apartments about 5 minutes walk from centre.

Stayed in the Abba Rambla in 2007. Quite close to the action, but not too close, was fairly new at the time. Quite smart place, helpful staff. But it could be a hole now so check tripadvisor!

Hotel gran Florida is not central but overlooks barca. It's a 10 minute taxi ride to town centre. Wonderful hotel, peaceful, beautiful views and very close. It's where barca sometimes stay before games. Not hugely pricey either.

We've been a few times and this is the best one we've stopped in near to the centre.
There will be better but this one was really good value, not too cheap but well worth it.

I stayed here in January link. Was excellant. We had a balcony view and the service was first class. Breakfast was hot and cold buffet and continental with cakes and pastries. I really could fault it.

I chose it because it's reviews and because it was 3 minutes walk from the Plaça Catalunya.

I'm back in Barcelona again in September and I'll be staying here.

Sick of hearing this about Barcelona. It's an urban myth, in that it is no worse than any other large city. If you look like a tourist, whether it be in London, Paris, Rome or Barcelona, you will be the target of pick pockets and muggers.

Barcelona is perfectly safe, as long as you take the usual precautions. To be honest, I've had worse problems with pick pockets in Paris, and the usual gypsy tricks.

Hotel montcada on via Laietana(?) parallel to La Rambla and close to Barro Gotico was excellent. But like someone else said, pickpockets are a nightmare

We stayed in one of the Silken chain hotels, just off Las Ramblas. Was very nice and reasonably priced. Think I booked it on laterooms.com
