Default HTC Desire problem: cannot make calls, cut off instantly

Any ideas what could be up? Can text fine, connect to Internet fine, but when I try to call any number, it instantly drops the call before connecting.

I have tried the usual, rebooting, cleaning battery and sim card and all contacts to no avail.

Any ideas if the phone itself is fooked?

Not sure but I've had that happen on my HTC Legend a few times over the last year or so, although normally leaving it for a minute or turning it off and on again sorts it out.

    I am an Orange yes.

No, people cannot call me either.

Accessed a hidden menu and changed a setting to GSM only, instead of WCDMA preferred and can call fine. The moment I switch it back, cannot call at all.

I know of a problem where the handset is switching between 2G & 3G.

WCDMA still has some pretty large holes in the coverage compared to GSM & even in a lot of areas that are covered there are more handsets at times than the networks can cope with.

Theyre all trying to catch up with the demand but it seems to have taken them all by surprise

I'm on Orange and sometimes have problems calling out. Phone seems to "forget" there is a signal there (or maybe there isn't and Orange have fucked something up?) and refuses to call out or accept calls (straight to a txt saying I have a missed call).

If I leave it a minute or so it suddenly realises it has a signal again and everything is fine. Never used to do that. Not sure if it's the HTC or Orange
