Chants that could be deemed ‘offensive’……
and those that contain bad language. If they were banned from English football grounds, what would be your reaction? Now when I say offensive, I don’t mean those chants that we all know should be banned (racist or about tragedy etc), but those that could be argued as harmless banter between fans (‘in your Liverpool slums’ for example).
The reason I ask is given the new legislation in Scotland which the SNP are trying to force through; fairly innocent chants which are nothing more then ‘banter’ could be banned. One Hibs fan yesterday said that the legalisation could mean its illegal for Hibs fans to sing ‘feed the weegie’s, let them know its xmas’ should they visit Glasgow at xmas time. Surely thats going OTT? We've sung that chant when Everton have played at the SOL close to xmas (and no doubt it will appear on boxing day as well!)
Obviously Scotland has unique problems with chanting, but could we see similar laws introduced into England? It could be argued by the authorities that it would make football grounds totally family friendly.
Btw, can we not turn this into an Old firm thread as it will only end up being pulled by the mods.

Re: Chants that could be deemed ‘offensive’……
Good Post,
I was brought up listening to quite foul abuse on the terraces. But now
it turns my stomach when I hear it when I take the kids, irony there somewhere. Swearing in public is a public order offence simple as. But emotions run high at matches, so a degree of leniency is observed.
My personal feelings are cut it out and you'll see yet another decrease
in attendances.

Totally agree with the above mate. When I first started to go to Roker Park, I heard plenty of chants which have now thankfully disappeared from our game. However, if the authorities try and remove the pantomime style banter between fans as it could be deemed offensive, then as you rightly say, attendances will drop again.

Twas always the Aussies who were reknown for bad, crude and offensive language, but these days they are kittens compared to the absolutely foul and rank everyday language used by many on the streets of the UK.
Why oh why must every ther word be a F or C or T...have we lost the ability to be civil, courteous and polite...are we now prepared to reduce or commuications to filth and drivel?
I have 6 kids, who probably explete the odd swearword amongst friends, but they'd get the hiding of their lives by mouthing any resemblance to the utter atrocious garbage that comes from others....
I really don't know what we as a nation are coming to...and I'm no prude, simply proud of being a decent human being with the ability to hold my head up as being.

If they remove any chants with swearing and, as you say, songs like "feed the scousers" etc which are nothing more than harmless banter then attendances would definitely drop. I'd consider not going (I'd probably still go like), not because I cant stand not to swear, but simply because it would be yet another step towards being treated like a child at the football

I don't agree with them but I have been to games where the full pub or concourse has been singing them. Mags away at central station every one to a man was singing it and doing the actions
I agree with your second point. If the authorities had their way we would just turn up, sit down, shut up, clap politley and piss off home

fair enough. i do tend to find that chants of a racist nature dont get further than the boozers in the main. they never seem to get latched onto in the stands, thankfully.
