You don't have to register anything for it to be protected by copyright law, but you would have to be able to prove its yours. This can be done via software such as Photoshop in the properties of the photo.

The thing is, if websites want to disable copying or saving of images they're free to do so, so I cant see why they make a fuss if they dont. I agree that links to original articles should be posted along with quotes taken, that seems only fair, but if a website doesn't want their images used, disable hotlinking, simple as that. As I say, they can block you from saving the image all together if they own the copyright & wish to protect it.
