    Default Going on strike

Huge issue for me. The school I work at is due to become an academy in September. I disagree with the principle of academies but lots of schools in the area are transferring over and the cuts in services to schools that dont are absolutely horrendous. In short the school at least in the short / medium term will be much better for students as an academy mainly down to the 750k the school gets being able to protect its services. Many teachers are concerned because our pay and conditions are transferring into the hands of the Governing body.

However despite this I think its definitely better for the school to change over and feel really strongly about it. The Union have held a ballot on strike action - from a 50 percent turn out it got the majority it needed for strike action. The local union reps have been horrendous coming out with comments like 'if you dont support the union action totally you should leave, or even better go into a room and put a gun to your head' Should I:

    a) Go on strike and picket, thats what unions are for I might need them in the future even though i'm dead against their action.

    b) Go on strike and not picket - at least i'm not visably supporting the action.

    c) Not be a sheep and go into work even though i would lose a lot of friends over it.

    d) Leave the union and join another one.

Similar dilemma caused me to withdraw from the Union I was part of nearly 10 years ago and make my mind up I would never join one again. Dont let some jumped up rep guilt trip you. The Unions look after themselves first and their members second. Stand on your own two feet marra. Personally I would also resign and you can tell the Union rep why.

    b) is your only option if you want to progress and not get hassled.
You do what they want but not enough to show you support them and then in the near future you leave the union.
This is one of the reasons i despise unions, these aren't the unions of years ago protecting workers, these days unions are nothing more than self serving bullying bastards out to feather their own nests and use people to play politics with.

Just walk out with the majority unless you think you can handle being labeled a scab for the rest ov your life and shunned by everyone

If that's the only argument for going along with the Union action, any rational person would leave.

Depending on what industry you work in and if you can take the shit that will be thrown and possibly get knocked the fuck out if you scab....I am not saying it's right or wrong but in my eyes you cross a picket line you get everything you deserve ..you don't have to support the strike to walk out

if you agree with the academy, then stick to your principals and go in.
