Default From Blackpool (Home) to Wolves

    Below is the partnerships/trio in the key central defence area that there have been over the past 19 games;

    Blackpool Home (Lost 2-0) -Onuoha(Bramble sub)/Ferdinand [GK - Gordon] 1/2
    Blackburn Home (Won 3-0) - Bramble/Ferdinand [GK - Gordon]
Aston Villa Away (Won 1-0) - Bramble/Ferdinand [GK - Gordon]
    Notts County Home (Won 3-0) - da Silva/Ferdinand [GK - Mignolet] 3
    Newcastle Home (Draw 1-1) - Bramble/Ferdinand [GK - Gordon]
    Blackpool Away (Won 2-0) - Bramble/Ferdinand [GK - Gordon]
    Chelsea Home (Lost 4-2) - Bramble/Ferdinand [GK - Gordon]
    Stoke Away (Lost 3-2) - Bramble/Ferdinand/Mensah [GK - Gordon] 4
    Spurs Home (Lost 2-1) - Bramble/Mensah [GK - Gordon] 5
    Everton Away (Lost 2-0) - Bramble/Mensah [GK - Mignolet]
    Arsenal Away (Drew 0-0) - Bramble/Mensah [GK - Mignolet]
    Liverpool Home (Lost 2-0) - Bramble/Mensah [GK - Mignolet]
    Man City Away (Lost 5-0) - Turner/Mensah [GK - Mignolet] 6
    West Brom Home (Lost 3-2) - Turner/Mensah (Ferdinand sub) [GK - Mignolet]7
    Birmingham Away (Lost 2-0) - Turner/Onuoha [GK - Mignolet]8
Wigan Home (Won 4-2) - Turner/Onuoha (Ferdinand sub) [GK - Mignolet]
    Fulham Home (Lost 3-0) - Turner/Onuoha [GK - Mignolet]
    Bolton Away (Won 2-1) - Mensah/Ferdinand [GK - Mignolet]9
    Wolves Home (Lost 3-1) Mensah/Onuoha [GK - Mignolet]10

    -------------------

There have been no less than 10 different central defensive combinations. Out of all of those used the most promising was probably the Bramble/Ferdinand combination with Gordon behind. The Chelsea game appears a poor game, however, Chelsea were devastating in that game.

If we are to have a better next season there has to be more consistency in this area. To think we complained of too many central defenders in the summer. It has been an issue in one respect however we have needed (and used) every single one of the players that can play there.

And this is only one part of the pitch. Next week centre midfield!

Very interesting read that, quite surprised at how well we've done with Ferdinand in there.

    Notts County Home (Won 3-0)

Don't know where you've got that from, we lost 2-1!

This makes you think we have missed Bramble/Ferdinand - surprisingly.

that's half the issue I have with SB keep going on about injuries - the bloke didn't/doesn't know his best team anyway, it was always changing (and not always due to injury either)

oops the folly of copy and paste

It does make you think twe have missed Ferdinand/Bramble doesn't it. Funny thing is that there were games in that period where Ferdinand played at right back instead of central defence.

Bramble has never looked comfortable alongside Mensah, which is borne out by those results. Ferdinand has done a good job, despite being accused of being a bottler by some, and chucking him out to rush an unfit Turner back looks even more like madness when you consider how much better we were doing with Anton in there.

Something that it does show is that the backline we have played on and off all season isnt that bad and the fact we have been all over at the back is fucking shocking considering how many games all of the back four have played. If we were tossing in kids or players that aint played many games at all you could understand.
