If it was a blood clot the swelling wouldn't go away until the blood clot had been absorbed (which can take weeks) - the swelling wouldn't just come and go.
But still get it checked out just in case - I ended up with a DVT from sitting at my desk at work for too long.
When I had the blood clot in the back of my knee my calf swelled up massive, went red and became really hot. I could only walk a few paces before what felt like a really bad cramp would set in in my calf.
I'd get it checked out as soon as you can. Any chest pain or shortness of breath call an ambulance.
