to stay at my parents apartment, i am going with my wife and our 18month year old. i was wondering what i do about a car seat for her? Do I need to take my own, do I rent one or do I have her on my lap? This is the first time travelling with my daughter so not sure what the common practice is??

Edit: Sorry I'd assumed you were travelling in a taxi for some unknown reason. You need a car seat which the car hire company usually supply.

Anyhoo if it's for a taxi then:

You don't need a baby seat in a taxi. Take a harness type thing that straps to you and then to the bairn.

In the Front Seat

The child MUST use the correct child restraint.

In the Rear Seat

The child MUST use the correct child restraint.

In a licensed taxi or licensed hire car, if a child restraint is not available then the child may travel unrestrained in the rear. This is the only exemption, and has been introduced for practical rather than safety reasons. You should always think about ways to make sure that a child seat is available.

It is the driver's legal responsibility to ensure that the child is correctly restrained.

We took one of these but the bairn was only 8 months.
