    Have I got this right?

Clegg was on this morning pushing it, and now Cameron is on against it.

And we're getting a referendum on May 5th.

Bloody hell, gonna have to do some swatting up on this.

Makes fuck all difference to me, as our MP gets miles more than 50% anyway.

AV is a cross between PR and FPTP. I cannot see the harm in being given the change to vote for one person and effectively add a insurance vote against another - i.e. For Lab, Against Tory.

I wonder how the referendum votes are measures - PR or FPTP!!!!

If it's the first round, those with lowest number of votes is eliminated and their 'preferences' allocated to the other candidates. This sort of thing keeps going until someone has 50% or until two are left. Most votes wins.

Is the Jenkins Report online anywhere?

Your insurance vote would just end up going to some random minority party tho surely?

As I understood it from listening to Clegg and the subsequent debate this morning, you can list your preferences eg 1-5 but don't have to fill them all in. So if eg you wanted Candidate A but would take B if A didn't make it you would vote A - 1 and B -2 if you didn't want Candidate C at all you could skip putting a number in their box.

Like I say, it's an area I realy need to do some research on as I'm not that well genned up on this at all, as indeed I suspect many folks aren't.

If we are to have a referendum, I'd like to at least have some basic knowledge as to what it is I'm being asked to vote for or against.

Could be a problem when voter apathy is rife anyway. If people can't be @rsed to just pick a candidate then I can't see them mulling over a list of preferences.

    Mine would, yes.

But other people might have my first choice as their 2nd. And so they would get in.

AV removes the age old problem of WANTING to vote for X, but ACTUALLY voting for Y because your scared Z will actually get in.

I see it as a watered down version of PR that nobody really wants.

It is. Those who want FPTP don't want the change, as it favours them.

Those who want a change, want PR.

But AV is a 2nd best option, which is quite ironic
