    Default Being called a mackem

Reading articles on here, it seems some people are happy to call themselves mackems and be called a mackem, however, i hate it.

I have always thought it was originally an insult from them up the road!!! and now suddenly a lot of people accept it as a nickname, which i think just makes us look thick as f*ck!

Just wondered everyone elses thought / opinions on it? am i right or wrong? etc

I like it and would certainly refer to myself as a Mackem with a sense of pride, as to me all it means is that I am someone from Sunderland.

I wasn't aware anyone from Sunderland objected to being called it, until just now.

It possibly was, but I guess that we have adopted the term. Just like lots of black kids see nothing wrong or insulting in referring to themselves by the N word.

how does it make us look thick as fuck? It's just us saying call us what you want because we couldn't give a flying fuck. I'm not even born in Sunderland but even I don't take great offence to being called a mackem. I failed to understand how someone in Sunderland does then take offence.

It was an insult we've adopted, and i'm proud to call myself a mackem. People recognise that i'm from Sunderland because of that.

In a similar way Spurs fans adopted the "yid" tag.
