    Default our national anthem

just watched the commonwealth games and noticed that when englands anthem is played they play jerusalem. now why cant they do that for the football internationals instead of that god awful god save the queen, i feel no affinity whatsoever with that song, just find it hard to get patriotic over a person, not saying jerusalem should be the anthem but its gotta be better than what we have now, land of hope and glory maybe?

I've had the radio on and heard Jerusalem played as the English anthem, and it's a lot more inspiring than that awful dirge Gawd Save the Queen. Written by Blake too, who was born in the capital.

Another point about GStQ though - it is the national anthem of the United Kingdom, which includes, for example, Jockland. Now if I played for the sweaties and we were lining up against England, after (the very stirring) Flower of Scotland, I would stand with hand on heart for GStQ as well by way of a bit of pre-match wind-up. After all, it's my anthemn too.

    England needs its own anthem.

The Commonwealth games council carried out a poll of Land of Hope and Glory, GSTQ and Jerusalem. Jerusalem polled 52% of the vote. I would much prefer to hear/see it as the English anthem for the national football team too, but that is up to the FA. Jerusalem is also used as the national anthem for the national cricket team and the rugby league team.

should be land of hope and glory for the uk national anthem anyway, monarchy is an outdated concept which apart from creating tourism (which we pay them far over the odds to do) does absolutely nothing for the country

Don't mnid Jerusalem but does call to mind rugger buggers at Twickenham (although I am a rugby union fan too).

Much prefer I Vow To Thee My Country. Makes me feel quite emotional.

GSTQ is fine for now with the Queen as monarch. OK it is the UK anthem - but it is more closely associated with "England" and England does constitute almost 90% of the UK (by population).

It will be different when the Queen dies and her idiot son gets a go at the job (if indeed he does). I have no problem singing GSTQ at England games (and indeed will do so tomorrow night). I am not going to be so keen on GSTK when Chuck is there. I think that would be a good time to switch to Jerusalem.

It is the maddest of songs mind: "And did those feet in ancient time. Walk upon Englands mountains green: And was the holy Lamb of God, On Englands pleasant pastures seen?" Putting to one side that the whole Jesus of Nazareth thing is more myth than fact, there were very few package holidays in those days - I doubt if a carpenter's son would have been on an El Al City Break to London."

Understand The Beatles, never get Lennon as a solo artist. But this is for another forum…
