Ok lads and lasses, looking for some ideas.

In a couple of weeks im flying to Sydney then travelling up to Cairns. 4 weeks travel time.

Now I have read most of the usual travel guides etc but what I really want to find is the more obscure/unique/interesting places that maybe aren't as well 'published'. Advice from people out there would be much appreciated.

Will want to stick to the coast as much as possible but won't mind venturing inland to some extent.

So which gems should I not miss and make sure I get to? Cheers in advance.

If you're doing the barrier reef I'd recommend travelling an hour past Cairns to Port Douglas and go from there. We went to the outer reef from there and it blew me away.

Cairns is mint as is Townsville and Brisbane

Bit further south there's a place called Hervey Bay, the beach is topper and turtles were nesting there when we went
Try to get out on a boat to one of the GBR islands - Green island, Hamilton island etc.
Loads and loads to do mate

Kind of roughing it to be honest, going to have nowt but a rucksack. Hop on/hop off bus and just give ourselves the freedom to just do whatever we want really.

As far as 'doing' something, im more interested in finding little towns, villages etc with some real character to them. Just a good ol' explore

Don't miss Byron bay. Amazing place there and worth a couple of days. Great chilled out atmosphere.

Whitsunday islands is probably on your itinerary or it should be anyway. Take care booking a cruise though. Some of them are basically booze cruises. Fine if you're a young un but might be a bit rowdy if you want an early night. We went on a boat called the Schooner Friendship out of Airlie beach and it was perfect.
