I know very little about bikes but noticed this at Halfords which looked desent to me but I wanted the opinion of the SMB as I know theres some keen bikers on here.

    Post in there mate.

From what you have described as wanting to do you have two options.

Join the dark side and buy a Mountain bike, of which The Specialized hardrock is a very good option . This will be good for the off road stuff but it's not the best for considerable distances on tarmac

A hybrid would allow you to do some off-road stuff, nothing extreme, but give you narrower wheels for improved performance on the road.

I reccomend the Specialized Crosstrail or the Specialized sirrus for this

If you're willing to go up to your £400 budget there's a hardrock with disc brakes and better spec
