    Default Loft Conversions

How much am I looking at? Just got a small terraced cottage and considering my options to get more space. I could move house but I quite like the idea of being mortgage free in a couple of years and I also like the location.
Would it just be a case of boarding it out and putting a light in or is it feasible to put a proper bedroom in. If it's the latter, do I need to get planning permission or anything?

    Planning permission = needed
Cost = 15K-25K (and the cost is also dependant on the type of house its being done to..Victorian, modern etc

Edit... if you are doing it yourself yes it is relatively simple if you are only putting velux windows in, put make sure that it can still circulate the air. I wouldnt have thought the head clearance would be big enough if just a velux window is used?
You can do a decent job yourself (a good one) for under 10K.

Selling a house with a DIY loft extension is like expecting goals from a team with eight midfielders.
Anyone who needs to ask the OPs original question is incapable of doing the job to a standard acceptable to the insurers and mortgage companies of the people he may one day be selling to.
Do it properly, your families lives may depend on it.

This was a public service announcement on behalf of the "Make Sucking Noise With Teeth And Say Fuck Me Marra Some Right Cowboy Bodged This Up Didnt They Association Of Builders".........on second thoughts Do It Yourself. Itll be work for someone in the future to put it right eventually.

Planning permission is the least of your worries doing a loft conversion. If it's to be transformed into a habitable room it will require building regulations approval. Nightmare on past experience, need min 2000mm headroom from landing to ceiling iirc

Don't listen to the negativity on here mate, if you want it done try to get 3 quotes from companies people you know have used before, they will take you through the process. Bloke a few doors along from me has had it done, 3 bed semi and he seems happy with what he got for £20k, big bedroom with storage and ensuite. I'll get you the number if you like, no harmnon giving them a call.
