Fülöp heading for exit
Jul 22 2010 by Luke Edwards, The Journal
Recommend MÁRTON Fülöp’s Sunderland career appears to be over as the Hungarian mulls over a move to Ipswich Town and a reunion with ex-Black Cats boss Roy Keane, writes LUKE EDWARDS
Ipswich made an official bid for Fülöp this week, which The Journal understands is likely to be accepted as Steve Bruce has decided he would rather get rid of Fülöp than use him as a temporary replacement for the injured Craig Gordon.
Gordon will miss the start of the new season because of injury, but Bruce will not give Fülöp (pictured below) a second chance at the Stadium of Light after the 27-year-old made it clear he wants to leave.
Fülöp fell out with Bruce last term when the Black Cats boss made Gordon his undisputed number one. The former Spurs prospect had hoped to find another Premier League club, but probably sees Ipswich as an attractive alternative.
Although he has pushed Gordon at times, he has reached the stage of his career where he wants regular first-team football. Keane is willing to give him that in the Championship at Portman Road.
Fülöp was not included in the Sunderland party which arrived in Portugal this week and has been training with the reserves during the squad’s pre-season’s preparations. Rather than turn back to a player who has questioned his judgement, Bruce is happy to let new signing Simon Mignolet and Trevor Carson compete for the right to deputise for Gordon.
Sunderland have also been linked with a move for David James, a free agent after his contract with Portsmouth expired.
