Sex club opens at Marsden Grotto Pub

I know the pub trade is on its knees, but this seems a good way to whip up some business:

A FAMILY pub on the Tyneside coast is set to open its doors as a bondage club.

The Cave Club is due to open at the Marsden Grotto Pub early next month for one night, and a website promoting the venture does little to disguise what is on offer.

Organisers are promoting the “unique experience” as “Europe’s only licensed cave, fully equipped for play”.

Visitors can “relax in the lounge area or on the terrace and enjoy the views of the cove. Have a walk on the beach or for the brave, have a swim in the sea”.

Owners of the pub have confirmed that if the bondage and sadomasochism night is a success, they will look to hold other nights in the future.

And licensing officials have confirmed, because it is a private function nothing can be done to stop it. The plans have left residents outraged.

Leonora Champion of Grotto Road, Marsden, said: “If that’s people preferences it’s up to them but they don’t have to put it in front of our faces.

“It’s just not nice when it’s in your area. I don’t want my grandchildren near anything like that.

“It really upsets me to think that I could be walking down there and see something I don’t want to see.”

Many residents were worried about the children living close by.

Mum-of-one Michelle Whitup, 33, also of Grotto Road, said: “I don’t mind things like that happening if they are done privately but not in the face of the public.”

A mum-of-two from South Shields, who asked not to be named, said: “I think it’s absolutely disgusting. I don’t live far from the grotto with my children and I would hate for them to see something.

“I’m just flabbergasted. Down there is supposed to be a place where you can take your family.”

Marsden Grotto Pub manager Paul Simpson said: “It is a private event being held on June 5. Local residents have nothing to fear. It won’t interfere with them in anyway.”

He added: “It is a one-off event but if it proves popular then we could make it a regular thing.”

A spokesman for South Tyneside Council said: “We have checked with the event and we are satisfied that there are no licensing implications.

“It’s a private function and it’s not open to members of the general public.”
