Being a fan of anyone other than a top four side is an exercise in endurance at times. In the recent past we have seen Sunderland totally humiliated by twice breaking the all time lowest points record in the premier league. The older ones among us have seen us relegated to the Third Division and believe me, that was far worse than anything I experienced yesterday.
Yesterday was a terrible result against the side we would least like it to happen against, but that is all it was. One bad result. We are still sitting mid table in the league having played a lot of tough games and still have everything to play for this season.
We have a young side who will hopefully be a lot stronger in the future for going through the hell that was yesterday and if they are not then we will have learned something about them. Things have been a hell of a lot worse than this.
I will also add that I was quite disappointed by the number of our fans who did not stay to the end. I fully understand the hurt and the angst which made many leave, but how can we have a pop at the players for not showing passion and commitment when we do a runner ourselves because we are losing? I reckon there were no more than 500 of us left at the end and not surprisingly a lot of familiar faces. Yesterday was a great opportunity to show the footballing world just how good our fans can be in the face of adversity and we failed miserably.

I remember us being relegated in 1957 and before that the 6-2 defeat in 1956 against Newcastle.
Since then we have won one major trophy, the FA Cup in 1973.
So we haven't had a lot to shout about and as you say a lot to have been down about. The Chelsea defeat at Roker in 1963 was truly dreadful. Grown men crying as we left the stadium. There have been many such games since.
But to dismiss people's feelings after the worst derby defeat in over 50 years as complete rubbish is wide of the mark.
I'm not a doom monger and it is not the end of our season. The points you raise are very valid about a young inexperienced team. I don't think Bruce should go either.
But people are hurting and dismissing their feelings is no help.
Football derbies are like a pendulum. We will rise again like we have so many times before but sometimes you just have to sit through pain and bear it. Time is a great healer but revenge in January would be even better.
