IT Help - Server's
Oh wise SMB,
I have been given the unenviable task of managing the upgrade of the works server as we are moving office and the existing server in the business centre we are moving to (one of our own centre's) is unsuitable for the company's needs. The company have an existing IT company who have suggested the following as the upgrade:
HP ML110 G7, 3.1 XEON, 16GB Ram, 2 x 250GB 2 x 2TB HDD File Server
Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Standard with 5 Clients
Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Additional 10 Clients
Data Transfer, Delivery & Installation (2.5 Days)
LTO3 Tape Backup Drive 400/800
Scsi Interface card
Scsi Cable
5 x LTO Cartridge Tapes + 1 x LTO Cleaning tape
Symantec Backup Exec 2010 SBS Edition OEM
Symantec Endpoint Protection V12 15 User
Draytek Wireless Router
For some clarity the server will support up to 15 users and will support email, remote working as well as network file storage for the companies projects.
Just wondering if the above sounds reasonable?

Re: IT Help - Server's
Do you know what the existing server is and how well that works - that should be your starting point.
I'd also be looking for some clarification on the disk types, not just the size

Re: IT Help - Server's
This is the info i've been given on the new server:
The current setup as far as I have gathered:
? Dedicated broadband coming into the building
? The network (All companies including arch) is connected to the broadband via an ISA server. The ISA server also handle DHCP request from all companies. (This is where the PCs pick up their IPs from)
? All ports in the building go back to the server room where they are connected to a managed switch and each port on the switch has its own subnet. This is so each room can remain private and companies using the broadband can not see each others equipment.
? As far as I knew companies in the enterprise centre only use broadband (But as I have found out one has a server and that server is currently using the ports to connect in externally)
? Building management (part of our company) have their own server which users connect to for file sharing and email. This server is only accessible internally as the ports needed to access from externally are being used by the other company I have found with a server.
The plan with the new server would be to replace the current server, install a new router which will connect to the broadband already in place to pick up the internet (This will allow the company to control their own ports to connect from external). Have all PCs, printers, server and router connected to a separate switch to the rest of the building (There are some spare switches in the comms room so we are planning on reusing one of those). The rest of the building will continue to use the managed switch to router their equipment to the ISA server which will continue to be the interface between the internet and the rest of the companies in the enterprise centre.

Re: IT Help - Server's
The ml110 is not really a server its a high end PC, the ML110 also has OPTIONAL RAID, so if they are flogging you 2 2TB drives, make sure they are not planning of software raid.
I would personally avoid the 1 series and jump to ml330 for 15 users.
Secondley 16gb SBS 2011 and Exchange 2010?, your on real bare minimums there I would start at 24gb for a 15 user network.
The two 2tb`s will be SATA...a no no with exchange. Go for SAS
Shout if you need some more information
