    Default Upgrading from a D40

.... not that I'm going to do it

Got no money and don't start my new job for a while yet, just wondered what the SMB would recommend, wouldn't want to jump far if I'm honest, and preferably still a Nikon

If you've bought any glass it doesn't make sense to change.

Yeah, I've got the Nikor 55-200mm VR lens, as well as the kit lens, so like I said, would still want a Nikon. Just wondering what people would suggest.

sorry like, I'm a Canon man so can't really help but I'm sure notspavin will be along soon to recommend a D90, it seems like the business from what I've heard.

if you like the D40 then you'd love a D80 but if there's a way to afford a D90 then do it

    I upgraded from a D40 to a D2X.

It's a pro camera, and that's mainly a good thing (near infinite customisation, brilliant picture quality, superior build / materials) but also there's a few bad things too (it's very big, very heavy, quite a steep learning curve, small-ish LCD screen).

Prices are falling all the time. You can get big bargains on eBay second hand, especially if you're prepared to buy from the States, opt for standard delivery and run the customs risk. Mine cost around £800 last year, used but with a tiny shutter count (about 5,000), and they're even cheaper now. It was a very nervous 3 weeks waiting for delivery mind.

The D90 is really the best upgrade though. D300 at a push - it's not that much more expensive, especially since you'd be going body-only.

D90 - I had the choice out of a D90 and D300 body and after an afternoon with the pair of them I thought the D90 shot better pictures, was lighter and the menu's far easier to use coming from to a D40.
