FAO Any fans north of the Tyne
Quote:
Sunderland fans living north of the Tyne should take note of disruption to Metro services in the coming weeks.
Works to modernise part of the Coast (yellow) line between Byker and Tynemouth will begin on March 12, lasting 23 days until April 3.
The line will therefore be closed when Sunderland play Liverpool on March 20, while the same section will be subject to a temporary closure of the weekend of the Spurs game (February 12-13).
Fans who live along the affected route and who use Metro to get to the Stadium of Light can use replacement buses before continuing their journey via the South Hylton (green) line as normal.
All other services will operate as per the regular timetable.
The programme of works is designed to upgrade track, embankments, bridges and stations along the southern loop route towards the coast via Wallsend.
North Shields station is also being completely demolished but will continue to operate as normal during the works.
Ken Mackay, Director of Rail and Infrastructure for Nexus said: "The scale of the works leaves us with no choice but to close the line between Byker and Tynemouth for 23 days and over a number of weekends before that. Some stations will also need to close in the evening from 8pm.
"We know this will cause inconvenience, but the work cannot be done safely without closing lines, and the best way to do that is through a small number of concentrated blocks of work in one area at a time."
