He's trying to put the attention on the referee when something happens with Barton, whatever it is, and to use that attention to force the referee to give Barton favourable decisions. It's not a bad tactic if it works.

Either that or he'll be thinking "I can't be seen to book/give something against/send off Joey Barton just because his name's Joey Barton, or I can't be seen to go easy on people fouling Joey Barton just because he's Joey Barton."

That's why I was saying it's a decent strategy if it works. It's a very old trick but it's worth a try.
