I have a friend who is ebay queen (no). The ideal time to bid is with 18 seconds left. Enough time to process the bid but not enough time for anybody to bid higher than you.

This. Can't understand why anyone would bid in the 'normal' way when there are sites like Bidnapper and Auction Sniper just ready to do all the dirty work for you. I set the lead time at 3 seconds and Bob's yer uncle: nobody has time to strike a higher bid.

Only ever lost auctions that I have placed ridiculously low bets that have been outbid way before the end.
