He will be replaced by Ed Balls, the shadow home secretary.
Mr Balls' wife, Yvette Cooper, the current shadow foreign secretary, will take over the home affairs brief. Douglas Alexander will take over as shadow foreign secretary from Miss Cooper. Mr Johnson will quit citing personal reasons, but may still decide to do another shadow cabinet job. His tenure in the Treasury brief has been fraught with problems. He began by joking that he needed an economic primer to help him get over his lack of knowledge on matters financial.
