    Default Housing Benefit

If the Housing Benefit bill is £24billion then surely the best way to tackle this is NOT by cutting benefit entitlement but reintroducing rent control.

Keep rents down and there`s less to pay in benefits. All housing benefit does is distort the market and lead to ever increasing unaffordable rents and and a spiraling benefit bill while subsidising private landlords.

Cap rents and the drain of the public purse will fall.

    Easy???

I agree, it's a shame the thousands of buy to let landlords will probably default on their mortgages and a housing crash started if it was ever implemented though.
And as an aside thousands of families would be made homeless after the banks/building societies seized the houses back.

I shouldn`t pay taxes to subsidise someone elses property portfolio.

Isn`t it strange that people who are against the bloated welfare state or state intervention in the economy and the great supporters of the free markets howl when their publicly funded gravy train is under threat.

Just like the banks, the 1st to close you down if your business hits hard times or you fall behind with your mortgage payments citing market forces. BUT when market forces hits the banks they are the first to cry out for publicly funded help.

Nah, not at all. But private landlords are putting roofs over peoples heads who cant afford a deposit, or who are simply are too daft to get a deposit together and get their own places. Without them, there'd be a fair amount of people on the streets!
