Anything but Hertz. Overpriced shite cars with up to 50,000 miles on the clock. And you pay per mile, make sure you hire one with unlimited/inclusive miles for your road trip. 35 cents a mile really adds up.

Unfortnately i have to use Hertz in the USA as we have a corporate deal with them on Club Gold. If I get allocated another worn out Toyota Corolla I'm rejecting it.

In the UK, I can use Sixt, better cars that are what they say, no mileage fees, and better priced. Get a 1 series most trips. But theyre not in California

    Hi mate,

    Welcome to SF!

You can get around the City without a car no problem. It's only 7 square miles. You can walk/bus/tram everywhere in a short time.

A few things to keep in mind.

Rentals with a different drop off from pick up can be pretty expensive so definitely worth shopping around. Picking up in the City rather than at the airport can also make a difference (airport pick up has seemed to be cheaper, but not always). We use Priceline.com and negotiate the price. We usually end up with Enterprise; they'll pick you up for the rental.

You have to get from the airport to your hotel; that'll run you at least $50 plus tip in a taxi. Shuttles aren't any cheaper for 2 or more people and they stop en route so it can take an age to get to the hotel.

Valet/parking charges at hotels can be a bit steep in SF, LA & Vegas. I'd suggest in Vegas that you get any driving (Hoover Dam etc) out of the way early on and then dump your car; just bus/monorail/taxi/walk around the Strip.

Check what insurance your credit card gives you on rental cars. That can save you a decent amount of money.

PM me and I'll send you my email if you have more questions.

    Cheers,

    SF

Got another quick question I am hoping you can all help with.

We have booked 3 nights of digs in San Fran now and I am now trying to sort a hire car. Is there any point to having a hire car in San Fran or will it just be a nightmare trying to get it parked? Might be worth just booking the car to pick up on our last day in San Fran then drop off in Vegas at the end.

    Any thoughts?
    100% this

Most places in San Fran are accessible by foot / public transport. Parking as you say can be a nightmare.

I'd pick the car up on the last day from somewhere like Dollar.

I drove the other way, 7 hour drive from Vegas across the plains to the Pacific Coast then up to SF. As someone said it's a long drive but not too taxing. If you don't have sat nav however make sure you have a good map.
