Default McCarthy 'scarier' than Keane - Collins

    Sorry if SEB http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/...ier-than-Keane

    Quote:

ROY KEANE may have established a reputation as one of the best paint-stripping managers in the business but Danny Collins claims nobody comes close to Mick McCarthy.

Stoke defender Collins faces his old boss, now manager of Wolves, today and says not even a raging Keane can hold a torch to the red-faced rockets Sunderland endured when McCarthy was in charge at the Stadium of Light.

Collins played under McCarthy for 18 months and witnessed a fair few hairdryer moments during Sunderland’s doomed 2005-06 season in the Premier League. While he claims McCarthy is an excellent man-manager, he also believes Keane is a pussycat by comparison.

He said: “I’ve played under Roy Keane but there is nothing scarier than a Mick McCarthy rollicking.

“Mick will always say his office is open if you want to have a chat. He can be nice but, when he needs to be, he can really tear into the lads and give them what for.

“Is he scarier than Roy? I’d say so – and he’s a bigger bloke as well. He was never too much into chucking stuff about but his presence was so striking. I remember a few occasions where he said, ‘If anyone wants to sort it we’ll go in the gym with gloves on’. Not surprisingly, there weren’t any takers. But he is a top bloke.”

Collins, a £2.5 million summer signing from Sunderland, feels that with games against Hull, Portsmouth and Blackburn to follow the Wolves clash, Stoke have a great chance to push on from their mid-table position.

He said: “These are the ones we really need to pick up points from. We want something to build on going into the new year.”

Wolves midfielder Greg Halford has thrown down the gauntlet to Rory Delap by claiming that he will win the battle of the long throwers.

Stoke’s Delap was a potent weapon last season as he unsettled Premier League defences with his missiles.

But Halford said : “I am reasonably confident, because we measured my throw once when I was at Reading and it went further than the world record, so we will see.

“There were once plans for a charity throw-off between us but it was scrapped. I’d love to take him on.

“All the teams I have played for have scored lots of goals from my throws and hopefully it will be the same for Wolves.”

I wonder if Collins' longevity was down to taking a few poundings in the ring.

Surprised no one's taken issue with Halford's last statement there. I must have missed them goals.
